Can't uninstall SQL 2012 ? Error Code 0x84b10001

$

I keep getting this error when I try to install, repair or uninstall SQL 2012 which won't run because of another error? Here is the error..

sql server has encontoiured the following error:

Could not load file or assembly \\\ C:/program files/microsoft/sql server/ 110 blah blah blah huge path / Microsoft.SQLserver.Configuration.Setup.Extension.DLL  Error Code 0x84b10001

I'm also not able to open SQL server management studio 2012. I have Management Studio 2008, but I need 2012 for my remote host which is using 2012. So, when I try with 2008 to open my db at the host, I get an error that I need 2012. This is driving me nuts..

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate with 8gig of ram, solid state drive, on a lap top, latest updates, etc,. I also have VIsual Studio 2012 Pro, Webmatrix, and everything else works fine. Just this one damn SQL server Management studio that I need for it's visual tools to do relationships with, etc, and it doesn't work. Any help would be most appreciated.. I'm going to try to update SQL server again and the computer in general to see if that helps..

A search gives me a lot of stuff about 2008 sql, but nothing with the same error, so I'm afraid to try those solutions since they don't seem to be the same problem as I'm having!

Sql Server 2008 jobs -- whose running the show?

$

Recently I found a number of databases listed as owned by a member of our team (domain\user). I changed the database owner to "sa".  Then I started to wonder about our Sql Agent jobs......they were owned by the same user... so I changed those owners to "sa" and the jobs continue to run fine.  then I checked the service account that the Agent runs under. It is listed as "Local service" which is all-powerful locally. But when I right-clicked (in SSMS) the SQL Agent and went to properties it showed the "connection" property as using the domain user name!

1. I guess, under these circumstances, I can change the "connection" property name to "sa" (as the jobs are being run by local service anyway). Does that make sense to you?

2. Also some SSIS jobs run under a proxy agent. I presume that that account preempts "local service" for those jobs so we are still safe changing the connection to "sa". Do you agree?

TIA,

edm2

P.S. Given our IS Team generally logs into servers using their domain name (for auditing purposes) this leads quite naturally to the situation described above.  We need to be diligent to change DB\SSIS owners to "sa" after they are created.

Hello,

I have had to install SQL Server 2005 (x64) on a server running Windows Server 2008 R2. The install succeeds apart from the client tools (BIDS and SSMS). Are the client tools compatible with the operating system?

Hi Everyone,

I'm running an upgrade test from Sql Express 2008 to Sql 2012 (not express).

I upgraded SQL Express 2008 to SP2 using SQL @008 R2 SP2. No problems

I then installed upgrade advisor 2012. No problems

I ran upgrade advisor and got a reporting error. Here it is:

In the description column: "The best practice group returned null result"

In the When to Fix column: "before"

Under that column: DPVSWITHTIME

I'm not sure what to do from here?

Here's some info:

Running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 (Trial version)

Running SQL Express 2008 R2 (Trial Version)

Running SQL 2012 (Trial Version)

Thanks

Move two existing databases into new SQL Server

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of moving two existing databases to a brand new SQL Server 2008 R2 server.  The existing databases are on separate servers today (2008 R2 as well).  I need to take a backup of both databases and restore them to the new SQL Server instance.  My question is - how can I restore all users and roles for both databases?  I am using SQL Server Authentication for my logins.  How can I retain all existing users, logins, roles, and object permission during the restore process?  Will security and permissions be restored from a backup?

SQL Server 2008 (Left over) Native Client after 2012 has been installed - BCP or xp_cmdshell issue

$

Had SQL Server 2008 R2 on the machine .... cannot remember the details .... (tried to uninstall 2008 or left it alone) and then installed 2012 Enterprise

Could not get rid of 2008 Native Client .... Uninstalled 2012, just to be able to clean up 2008 components; but could not get rid of the 2008

Gave up, and installed 2012 w/Sp1 this time..... the problem is still there ... the evil sqlncli10.dll

So, my xp_commandshell or BCP calls sqlncli10.dll (2008) instead of sqlncli11.dll (2012)

Can anybody help about not hearing about 2008 anymore and how to get rid of all components.  I searched registry adjustments, etc. ... but just did not work.

xp_cmdshell wants to go to SQLNCLI10.DLL

Migrating from SQL Server 2008 R2 Express to SQL Server 2012 Express

Hi,

Because of reporting features missing in SQL Server 2008 R2 which resulted in reporting issues while trying to make reports from within VS2010, which others have also confirmed on several forums, it seems I have no choice but to upgrade to 2012.

My first objective was to first uninstall SQL Server 2008 R2 and then install SQL Server 2012.  But couldn't go far as I didn't succeed uninstalling SS2008 R2.  The setup program made all its checks, confirmed that everything was ok then, after a few minutes, stopped with a "insufficient memory" error.  I even tried by just uninstalling the "Reporting Service" part but got again that same error message.  So I had no choice but to recover my whole disk.  Thanks to myself I made a backup!

BTW, the actual version of SS208 is SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition with Advanced Services SP2 CU1.  SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP2 is also installed on my disk.  For building my applications, I'm using Visual Studio 2010 Professionnal Edition SP1.  My machine actually have 1,75GB of 3.00GB total physical memory used, 1.75 of 6,2 GB total virtual memory used.  Finally, my hard disk has 60 GB free.  Unless I'm wrong, I just can't see where is the problem.

Now, getting back to SQL Server 2012 webpage, I could read that it was possible to upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2012.  Could this be my exit door?

I would really appreciate if someone could help.  What action should I take?

Thanks in advance for helping,

Stéphane

SQl server cluster question

I never installed cluster before, but we do have two existing cluster nodes of SQL servers that were intalled before.

I see the server name and cluster name are different.

Is that supposed to be that way?

For example the two server names are  MyServerCluster1, the other server name is MyServerCluster2.

But when I connect to the nodes using SSMS, I have to use diffrent names for it, myprodSQL, myQASQL.

And I tried to use servername to connect, I cannot connect to them.

So does it mean the nodes name are diffrent with servername, and when connecting, we have to use nodes name?

THanks

SQL Server SP Upgrades

We have an old SQL 2005 and Sql 2008 server that need to be service packed + CUed. My "boss" wants to to know what's my rollback plan in case the SP upgrade fails. Other than (depending upon the situation) rebuilding the sql install from backups (system and user DBs) what "rollback" options are there?

TIA,

Adding second node to Windows/SQL 2008 R2 clustering!

$

Hi!

I currently have a SQL cluster 2008 R2 ENT running 2 SQL instances on a single node Node1. The OS is win server 2008 R2 ent and the disks for both the instances are presented to Node1.

Node1 is put into production and we would want to add a second node Node2 to the existing cluster. I think below are the steps to perform this but would want to get it verified by the experts here.

1) Build second node Node 2 (OS with latest patches, same amount of NIC cards/drivers)

2) Present the disks in SAN to Node2 (the same disks presented to Node1 - via disk management etc)

3) Run failover clustering on Node2 and add to Node1

4) Run SQL installation from Node2 to add it to SQL clustering

Appreciate if someone can validate these steps and add if I am missing any, as this env is already in production and I don't want to mess up anything.

Many thanks

Hugo

issue with least privlege domain account when setting up SQL Server 2012 on Windows 2012

I setup SQL Server 2012 on a Windows 2012 standard server.

I used an admin domain account for the install of SQL Server.  SQL Server Service is running on

a domain account with no extra privileges.  It installed fine.

Once I start up SQL Server I get error in the application event log.  SQL will start.

What permissions are missing.  If I start SQL Server service  with a domain admin account I do not get this error?

I reviewed document 143504 on Configuring windows Service Accounts and Permissions, but it looks like it does not cover Windows 2012

sqlservr (4232) An attempt to open the file "C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles\Sum\Api.log" for read / write access failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ".  The open file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 (Developer Edition) - 64bit on Windows 8 Enterprise and an error message comes up stating the SQL Server is not compatible with this version of Windows. Has anyone had any success in getting it installed and working? I was able to get it installed and running just fine on the Windows 8 Release Preview.

Thanks a bunch

Service Packs in SQL 2008

$

We have SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition with no service pack applied till now. I am planning to apply the service pack on the server. I have a few questions before proceeding on this.

1)Can I apply SP3 without applying SP1 and SP2.

2)This server is merge replicated with publisher and distributor on the same server. So what should be the order in which Service pack has to be applied.

3)Should I stop all the replication jobs before applying service pack

4)The subscriber server is in again a publisher to another server with transactional replication. Can I leave that subscriber with no service packs as I dont have access to this subscriber server.

That's I have server1 ,server2 and server3.

Server1< ==> Server2 Merge Replication

Server2==>Server 3 Transactional Replication.

Is it neccessary that Server 3 also should be applied with service pack

Thanks

SBS 2011, SQL Server 2008 R2 SP will not install, always PendingFileRenameOperations?

$

We have a client with an SBS 2011 Server. All updates have ran ok except for SQL Server R2 Service Pack 1.

This continues to fail, and afteer investigation we came accross the issue with the following registry jey PendingFileRenameOperations located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Even if all updates are done (except the failed SQL update), there is always a pending file rename in the registry and associated file in the temo folder.

Even after renaming the registry key to PendingFileRenameOperations2 and rebooting the server, the key PendingFileRenameOperations comes back. We have booted the server 4 times in one evening without changing the above registry entry and still it keeps coming up with more and more PendingfileRenameOperations

It seems to be never ending and the files in question always seem to be the same size.

Has anyone else come accross the problem, I have seen similar posts/resolutions on the internet all resolving around the registry entry but this does not seem to be working.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Dave

Dear,

I upgrade SQL server 2008 to SQL server 2012 standard.
After i dit this i did a edition upgrade from standard to BI edition.

The SQL server indeed shows me that it is the BI edition but when i ask analysis server to show me the version he shows the standard64 instad of BI?
So lot's of features with cubes can not be made because that only works with BI edition or enterprise.
What can I do to let analysis server knows he is BI edition?
