Uninstall "SQL 2008 R2 Express" (Common Files & Database Engine Shared)??

$

I've been trying to uninstall SQL 2008 R2 Express but no luck.

I think I didn't remove the components in right order in Control Panel..

Now, I have left with a component calll "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup (English)" which I can't get rid of..

When I try to uninstall it, it gives me an error "Warning 26003. MS Server 2008 R2 Setup Support Files cannot be uninstalled because the following products are installed:

SQL Server 2008 R2 Common Files

SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Engine Shared"

If I click OK,

it says something like "Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package"sqlsupport.msi"

at this point, it wouldn't let me uninstall nor reinstall..

Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you!

Warnign about "SQL Server Broswer Service"

On several occasions monitoring solutions (such as System Center) have complained that the "SQL Browser Service" is not enabled on our sql servers. Generally we only install the default instance so I don't think the browser service is needed.  What are these monitoring solutions complaining about?

Error occurred while SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup

I already have sql server 2005 running on my computer (Win XP SP2) and I have been trying to install the Sql server 2008 R2 version. (I've downloaded in last week.)

While I'm installing, I got the following msg box :

The following eror has occurred:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

At that time, Installation progress show "ASConfigAction_install_postmsi_Cpu32".

So I assumed something is wrong in SSAS installation.

I just click "Cancel" in the above msg box as I have no choice.

After completed, it show "Failed" in "Analysis Services".

Then I restarted my PC.

When I try to start SSAS service manually, I got the following msg box.

The SQL Server Analysis Services (Instance_Name) service failed to start due to the following error:

Error 1053 : The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Actually I just want to try CUBE in this version. (my deadline is coming friday.)  :(

Please advise & thanks in advance.

Which Developer SQL Server to install with Visual Studio Professional 2012 ?

$

I have Visual Studio 2012 installed on Windows 8 Pro, from my Action Pack Subscription.  As an Action Pack member I have access to only the SQL Server Enterprise version.  As a developer, what is the best package for me to install to obtain developer capabilities for SQL Server and the  SQL Server Management Studio.

1. SQL Server Enterprise from Action Pack, seems like an overkill?

2. SQL Server Express, what will be my limits?

3. SQL Server Data Tools, not sure what is all included in this.

Is there still a Developer License for SQL Server included in Visual Studio 2012, or was that in older versions.   Sorry for my confusion, and thanks for any help.

Intellisense in SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition 64 bit

$

0

In the Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2012 page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc645993.aspx) under Development tools features listed bellow has note:"This feature is not available for 64-bit version of Standard edition."

Intellisense (Transact-SQL and MDX)
SQL query edit and design tools
Version control support
MDX edit, debug, and design tools

Does it means exactly what is written? Because of Enterprise Agreement my company has (as our sales department explained to me) we can't use Developers edition (for development purposes). Therefore we have to pay for either Standard or Enterprise edition. Although Standard edition covers all our needs, the lack of Version Control support and Intellisense is an issue because all our development servers are installed on 64 bit servers. We have to request license for new development SQL Server 2012.

Now, we are in situation where we need Version Controll (and Intellisense) with important price difference between Enterprise and Standard editions and I need clarification about this issue.

Getting started with FileStream/File Table full text search.

(SQLEXPRESS 2012 + Windows Server 2008R2)

I created a filestream database:

CREATE DATABASE FileStreamTest
ON
PRIMARY (NAME = FileStream1,
		FILENAME = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\FileStreamDat1.mdf'),
FILEGROUP FileStreamGroup1 CONTAINS FILESTREAM ( NAME= FileStream3,
		FILENAME = 'F:\FileStream1')
LOG ON ( NAME = FileStreamLog1,
		FILENAME = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\FileStreamLog1.ldf')
GO

Then I created a table (Documents) & I next created a full text catalog and index:

create fulltext catalog FileStreamFTCatalog AS DEFAULT
Create fulltext index on dbo.Documents
(Title, Text TYPE COLUMN TextType)
Key INDEX PK_Document
ON FileStreamFTCatalog
WITH Change_Tracking AUTO

I added a file named "This is a text.docx" and "This is a text.pdf"  The content of both files was "This is a test."

So now I search with query:

Select DcoumnetID, Title
FROM Documents
WHERE CONTAINS (Text, 'This')

I get nothing.  I thought both files would showed up.  What am I doing wrong?

Best way to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2 from SQL 2005

Hi,

i Need to upgrade a client from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2.

i Ran the upgrade advisor and get the following:

Ok, image does not want to upload now...Will try in a new post..

Looks lto me like thee only issue i must sort out is the "upgrade advisor determined that full-text search is currently installed"? Is this correct?

Then also what woul dbe the best way to upgrade? i Am tempted to insert the new SQL media and see if you can upgrade SQL? Or should i install SQL 2008 on a different instance and move the DB's? Sharepoint might have issues with this...

Thanks!

When running the SQL 2012 upgrade advisor (ua) on the server I need to upgrade (windows server 2008 r2 x64 w/sql server 2008), it gets stuck at 50% of the first of 3 steps and I don't know how to get it unstuck so it can finish.  Any suggestions please?  Thanks.

Installing SQL Server 2008 windows 7 desktop.

We are upgrading out office server, which is just used for testing and some internal data.  It's our primary domain server running server 2003 for about 5 people.  We also host SQL Server on it.  My question is, can I just install server 2008 on a good 8 core desktop instead of getting an expensive server?  What advantage is it running SQL Server on a real server vs a powerful desktop with a raid setup.   Is it mostly reliability? We will backup and it's not a big deal if the server goes down since it's internal. (And I can't use a virtual desktop hosted somewhere else at this moment).

SQL 2012 Setup issues - hexadecimal value 0x00 is an invalid character

$

Hi all,

Am having no luck installing 2012 RC0. The error I am getting is consistent no matter what I have tried. The problem always occurs right after picking any  option that requires the installer look inside my system to figure out what's there and what has to be done next e.g. Installation > New SQL Server Standalone.... Somewhere within that common inspection / configuration routine a character comes up that my system falls over on.

TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
------------------------------
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
'.', hexadecimal value 0x00, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 817.
Error code 0x84B10001.
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&EvtType=0x066FCAFD%25400x5539C151

System Details

  • OS: Win 7 Ultimate SP1
  • No Denali beta bits on the machine (never were)
  • .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed (.NET 4.0 also installed)
  • Installed extra patch for .NET 3.5 SP1 for Win 7 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=958488
  • Removed all SQL 2008 R2 bits (just to be sure)
  • Reinstalled Visual Studio 2010 SP1

Other stuff I've done:

  • Downloaded the 2012 bits twice
  • Extracted contents of the ISO into a physical directory and executed from there.

Same error every time.

Just to be sure it was a 2012 thing I tried running the SQL 2008 R2 installer and it ran past the point where I get the 2012 error without a hitch.

There is something in the 2012 installer that requires bits my system just does not have to handle that hex character as it should. All I can think of is that there is some form of hotfix / QFE that I have not applied and that is what is causing the hexadecimal value error I keep getting.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Nick

Marking your questions as Answered

 Hi All,

I want to make a pitch to have folks mark their questions as Answered once you've received an Answer that solves your problem. Everyone who posts a question has the ability to mark that question as Answered by clicking the Answered button for the Post that best answers the question.

There are a couple good reasons to do this:

  • Our search engine weights Answered questions more highly. By marking Answers you increase the chances that others searching this forum will find the answer directly rather than re-posting the question.
  • You give credit to the hard working folks who answer your questions. This is peer to peer support, so recognition is our only reward. (Check out the Top Answerers in 30 Days chart at the bottom of the thread list to see who is currently answering questions.)
  • You help me track the health of this forum. I get mail every day telling me how many unanswered questions are in this forum and I work to keep those numbers at a certain level. By marking Answers, I get a more accurate understanding.

I apreciate everyone's participation in the SQL Setup & Upgrade Forum whether you're asking questions, answering question or just reading along. Marking Answers is one way we can all work together to make the forum a little better.

After a few minutes of working with SSMS 10.50.1600.1 on the console of a cluster node, against a clustered instance,  it freezes and returns the error message below.

I ruled out a couple of organic mistakes I might have made, and read, on line, that the likelist solution was to repair ,NET 3.51.  And it worked, for a while:  the the problem returned.

A reboot will reactivate the SSMS; but it eventually hangs.

A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

SQL Server 2008 R2 product key change on production server

$

Hello,

We have a one production server which has Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) -  Standard Edition (64-bit). This SQL server 2008 R2 is already activated with valid product key and is good. When this server was shipped from DELL it came up with SQL Server 2012 media but we support SQL Server 2008 R2 standard so we used one of our own license copy to activate this server. Now we traded this 2012 media with Microsoft and they have sent us back SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition media with product key and now we want to use this new product key.

How can we change this product key on production server? Will it affect the server in case of changing the product key fails? Will the instance get corrupt?

I have one solution but I am not sure of.

By using the configuration manager, run the installation wizard, maintenance --> edition upgrade--> and there we can enter new product key.

But will this go smoothly? as we are not upgrading the edition of sql server. It has SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition now and new one is also same one. Just product key will be different.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Upgrading SQL 2005 x64 Enterprise to 2008 R2 Enterprise

$

Hi all.

I'm having a problem running an in place upgrade of SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise to 2008 R2 Enterprise.

When I run setup.exe and choose "upgrade", I am able to upgrade all components apart from the database engine. I am not given the option to select an instance prior to this. I have ensured that "x64" is selected from the bottom "options" tab on the initial setup screen. My current installed version of SQL is definitely 2005 x64 Enterprise, I have checked this with @@version and in the general properties of the Management Studio.

The strange thing is that if I select "x86" from the bottoms tab in SQL setup I AM able to select the 2005 instance, which lists the database engine as something it will upgrade in the next screen. Obviously I have not proceeded with the upgrade as I feel something is wrong somewhere.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the x64 install to detect the 2005 instance and upgrade the database engine?

Thanks
