SQL Server 2008 R2 Encrypted Connection

Hi,

I'm trying to enable encrypted connection to the SQL Server 2008 R2. I have created a certificate from the Web Server template using the domain CA, used the local machine name as the Subject (CN=vm1.contoso.local) and used two alternative names (DNS=vm1.contoso.com and DNS=contosovm1.cloudapp.net). This certificate was shown in the SQL Server Configuration Manager and afer restarting the SQL Server service I was able to connect to the server using encrypted connection only using the vm1.contoso.local address.

When I try to connect to the server using other names (vm1.contoso.com or contosovm1.cloudapp.net) I will get this error in the SQL Management Studio:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: SSL Provider, error: 0 - The certificate's CN name does not match the passed value.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -2146762481)

vm1.contoso.com is a CNAME for contosovm1.cloudapp.net

I was configuring the server and certificates using these articles and I double checked that the certificate meets requirements mentions in the Technet article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189067(SQL.100).aspx

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj823131.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqljourney/archive/2012/03/16/implementing-ssl-encryption-for-sql-server-in-a-dns-forwarding-environment.aspx

How can I troubleshoot this issue and get the encrypted connection working in SQL Server using certificate with SAN attributes?

SQL Server 2012 - Analysis, Intergration, Reporting Services are disabled

I have installed SQL Server 2012 and when I try to connect to Analysis Services is disabled. The same goes for Integration Services and Reporting Services. The only 2 options for connection are Database Engine and Azure Storage.

I already checked the SQL Configuration Manager and all services are running. I also turn off the firewall just in case it was blocking the services.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thank you!

I need to set up a linked server to a SQL 2000 server from my new SQL 2012 server.  I see that the Native Client does not support access to SQL 2000.  What is a supported method/client I can use?

Yet Another SP3 Will Not Install

Hello Folks,

I have tried to install SQL 2008 SP3 from Windows Update and the download.  It starts the install and then disappears with no error code or any notice at all.  I have tried the repair shared components bit and that fails with "Attributes do not match."  Tried putting missing install files in c:\windows\installer and that has not changed the scenario.

The SQL server is installed on d:, but apparently some logs and other get written to c: .  In addition to Standard, machine also had SQL Express on it for some reason (Arcserve?) and may still.  Updates shows SQL Express hotfixes applied.

I would appreciate help on this.

You folks have a good whatever,

Robert

Update failed for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB2528583)

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 64 bit.  I am running Windows 7, 64 bit.  I already have SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit installed on my system.

1) First I tried via Windows Update.  I'm already caught up on all other required and all other desired optional updates.  When I try to run this update, it fails with this message:

Code 84BC051B Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

When I click "Get help with this error" and "Open the Windows Update Troubleshooter", and progress through the troubleshooter, then it claims to fix something ("Repair Windows Update components - Fixed" and tells me to retry the update, and when I simply click to Try Again,  it says "Windows is up to date - There are no updates available for your computer".

But then if I click to find updates online, it still finds the update for SQL Server R2 SP1 among the available optional updates.

2) Second, I tried downloading an executable to install.  When I run the executable, I get this error:

"SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

Any idea what is going on?

Thanks!

Per-service SID’s are not being granted correct permissions

Hi,

I had posted this here : https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/770984/per-service-sid-s-are-not-being-granted-correct-permissions, but no response as yet.

When installing SQL 2012 (on a VMWare VM), based on the following article : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504(v=sql.110), I have noticed that the SQL per service SIDs are not being granted the correct permissions. From the initial install, the following is what was observed (the red x's being permissions that should have been granted but were not).

SQLSIDs

When re-installing and changing from specifying a domain account, to the default values, during set-up, the 4 service SIDs that were not added to 'Log on as a Service' initially were then correctly granted permission, but the other 4 in 'Bypass traverse checking', 'Adjust Memory Quotas for a process' and 'Impersonate a Client after authentication' were still not added.

When running a repair on this install, 'NT Service\MSSQLFDLauncher' was then granted the correct permissions, but 'NT SERVICE\MsDtsServer110' was still missing 'Bypass traverse checking' and 'Impersonate a Client after authentication'.

This also resulted in the installation of Reporting Services - Native failing in the original installation with 'Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation'.

If anyone has recently installed SQL 2012, can you check (via gpedit.msc) that the correct 'User Right Assignment' was granted to the per Service SIDs as perhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504(v=sql.110) ?

SQL Server 2005 and 2008R2 on same cluster

We are wanting to retire our server 2003 cluster with SQL Server 2005.  However a few apps/databases are having trouble with SQL Server2008R2.  So I would like to install a 2005 instance on our server 2008/SQL Server 2008r2 cluster.

Will they co-exist peacefully?

Thanks,

Inplace upgrade from SQL Server 2008R2 to SQL Server 2012

Hi,

I've just done an in-place upgrade in a VM from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 and noticed that after the upgrade the old folders of the SQL Server 2008 R2 instance are still present. I always assumed these would be removed? I can see that the upgrade went fine since the SQL Server windows services point to the MSXX11 folders and if i connect to the SQL Server with SSMS it report itself as being SQL Server 2012.

And one other strange thing is that all my system databases are still in the original 2008 R2 folders and that their database compatibility level is still SQL Server 2008. Also in the server settings (under Database Settings) the data, log, and backup folder still point to the 2008 R2 folders

I'm 100% sure that no errors where given during the in-place upgrade...

Kill DBCC SHRINKDATABASE?

Hello, this seems to be taking very long on one of our SQL 2005 dbs (almost a full day) but so far it looks like it released 2gbs back to the disk OS but if I kill this command will the SQL Server datafile then take back this 2gbs that it released?  And will killing this process be pretty instantaneous like maybe a minute or so or will it take very long like around the same amount of time to rollback?

Hi.

Been trying to install SQL 2012 to my new Windows 2008 R2 VPS.

After several attempts to install it getting the same error message I have almost given up..

  • I am using a DVD image downloaded from MSDNAA today.
  • I am using the graphical user interface when I'm trying to install.
  • Have installed all updates that Windows Update has to offer.
  • I am only trying to install: SQL Core, Fulltext, Integration services
  • Below is the log from the installation.
  • The rules report file can be downloaded from here: http://pastebucket.com/2616, the only thing that is not a green check is the firewall warning which is warning, since it is enabled.

SQL server services: the remote procedure call failed [0x800706be]

I installed SQL server 2008 R2 (Express) on my Windows Server 2003 Standard edition SP2; I already have the ISA server 2006 installed , which is used as a firewall and to monitor and to limit employees' internet access.

The installation completes successfully, and the SQL server started successfully. But once I open the server configuration manager, and click on the SQL server services, I receive the error: the remote procedure call failed [0x800706be].

The TCP/IP protocols are enabled.

"Allow remote connections to this server" option is enabled.

Windows firewall is disabled since the ISA acts as the firewall. I tried to go to the ISA and create a new RPC protocol for the SQL server, but it didn't find the SQL server.

I've been trying to solve this issue for 2 days; uninstalled and re-installed the SQL server, download 3 different versions, None worked.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Problems removing SQL Reporting

Hi,

First disclosure. I am not a SQL DBA. Very limited know of SQL. I have a server that SQL Server 2005 64-bit got installed on by mistake. I have been trying with great frustration to completely remove it so SQL Server 2008 64-bit can be installed at a later time. Under Windows 'Services' SQL Server Reporting Services is started. While I can toggle the start up type from automatic/manual and disable it this is not acceptable. It needs to be gone. Also, the Configuration Tools are still present: Reporting Services Configuration, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting, and SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. Some of the steps out may want me to try may have been tried before so patience is appreciated.

Thanks to those who could possibly help me.

I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a machine at work however, I keep getting a failure message telling me there is already a version of SQL Server 2008 installed on my machine.....I un-installed everything related to a previous installation of SQL Server 2008 on the machine....Why would I still be getting this message?

Trouble installing SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2012

I have a brand new install of Windows 2012 Server Standard Edition. I am trying to get SQL Server 2012 installed on it, but have been having a lot of trouble.

When I run the System Configuration Checker everything passes except for "Setup administrator" -

Rule "Setup administrator" failed. The account running SQL Server Setup does not have administrator rights on the computer. To continue, use an account with administrator rights.

If I go to try the "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation then I get the same "Setup administrator" error plus the following one.

Setup account privileges
Rule "Setup account privileges" failed.
The account that is running SQL Server Setup does not have one or all of teh following rights: the right to back up files and directories, the right to manage auditing and the security log and the right to debug programs. To continue, use an account with both of these rights. For more information, see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813696.aspx,
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813959.aspx andhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms813847.aspx.

I am running the install using the administrator account. The server is not on a domain. I have tried to suggestions in the links above as well as this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000257, but I still keep getting the same error. I even just re-installed the OS so it is fresh, nothing else on it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Hassan
