.ldf-file growing but common methods are not helpful

Hello dear Reader,

I have a problem with a log-File of only one database at one of our customers.

Since a few weeks the .ldf file grows over the day to 250 Gigabyte (while the .mdf file size is around 5 Gigabyte).

I took a look in the logs.

-Recovery Model is Full.

-Transactions-Logs are saved.

-The .ldf-File is 90% full (disk usage report).

-The .ldf-File gets shrinks each day after saving the data smaller to a few megabytes and grows in minutes till hours each day to 250 Gigabyte. (disk usage report)

-I should add that there are no open transactions!

-The database only gets used by a third-party application.

How I can find out / Monitor why the log file shrink and grows every day by ~250 Gigabyte?

It seems really that the transactions are valid (they get successfully cleaned each day, transactions saved but still 90% of that 250 Gigabyte are in use).

SQL 2019 Upgrade

Team,

we have SQL 2016 running on our environment.

  • can you pls share Pros & cons to upgrade sql 2019 environment?
  •  recently SQL 2019 release with CU1, shall we wait for first quarter to fix some bugs in sql 2019?
  • apart from analytics, is this gives sqlengine  Performance compare with sql 2016.
  • in-place upgrade / side-by-side upgrade which one best & safe ( in production).
  • we have SSRS (native) running on production. during in-place upgrade this existing SSRS removed . and we need to install SSRS feature alone & setup SSRS using restore encriptionkey/db backup.
  • & we have Transcational Replication ServerA (pub+distribution) to Subscriber.  So first update Publication then Subscriber is possible?  ( we cannot upgrade subscriber then publisher? )

SQL Server Setup on Hyper-V - Disk Config

Hi All,

I am about to start setting up an SQL server on Hyper-V for an ArcGIS Server. I have done a fair bit of reading on the subject of drive configuration and generally, people seem to agree that OS, Data, Logs and TempDB should all be on different drives as they have different performance requirements.

The hardware we have for the new server has 4 x 2 TB SAS SSDs in RAID 10, for VM storage and a 240GB RAID 1 for Hyper-V. The 4 disk array is currently configured as one big drive in Hyper-V.

Now, I can setup the SQL server to have separate virtual disks for OS, Data, Logs and TempDB, however, this seems to not really achieve much as all the virtual disks will be stored on the same SSD array.

I have seen some info about configuring SQL in Azure which seems to indicate that it is OK to put the Data and Logs on a Premium SSDs and TempDB on another (non-persistent) drive. I have also seen some people putting forward if you are on an SSD array the disk configuration becomes a lot less important.

If the case is that on this HW, I don't need to create a separate virtual disk for each of Data, Logs and TempDB, then I would prefer to simply have 2 drives - OS (including SQL server app) and Data (for Data, Logs and TempDB).

I'd love to hear any suggestions on what might be the best setup with the HW I have in your opinion.

Thanks

Regards

Mike

MS SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition for Test env

$

Hi all!

This question related for license terms of MS SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition.

Our company will plan to use MS SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition for test environment. I have red License guide for MS SQL Server 2019, but some points actually are not clear.

So, our cases below:

1. We will plan to restore backup from PROD env with data to TEST env for testing issues and diagnostic issues;

2. At TEST env we probably will communicate with external systems for data exchange for test issues. Such external systems could be located at PROD env.

Is there violation of license terms related to MS SQL Dev Edition? Could please anyone clarify?

How can I check if a product key I bought from Ebay is valid?

Dear all,

I bought through Ebay License for MS SQL 2014 Enterprise Edition.

The seller provided me some links to download the iso files for installation and sent me a product key.

Currently I have installed in my computer MS SQL 2014 Express edition.
I tried to do "Edition Upgrade" using the product key that the seller provided.
The setup says that this product key is not valid.

I currently tried the edition upgrade with the installation setup of Express Edition I have already installed.

To whom I should send this product key from Microsoft to inform me if this product key is valid?

And if it is valid can you inform me how I can proceed with upgrading my existing installation (Express)?

Service Pack 4 installation failure

Hi,

I have a frustrating problem. I have installed SP4 onto well over 100 SQL Server 2012 instances over the last month or so. All instances are named instances, all with the same instance name, all were at the same patch level and all went without any issue until now. I'm getting an installation failure, but I'm not getting any logs to study. When I run setup, a black pop up window appears and disappears instantly. I get no errors in the Bootstrap/Logs directory (no new folder is created), nothing in SQL Server logs and nothing in event viewer. I can't find anything that can help me to determine what the problem is. I'm fairly sure I've seen this before somewhere in a different role, but I can't find any details to assist. Setup.exe does not appear in the Task  Manager at all, or if it does, it disappears so quickly it can't be spotted!

All of our SQL servers are created from a template and all are identical. They are running SCCM secondary sites and the server that is failing is running SCCM normally, no errors. This is purely an error in getting the Setup process to run.  The Server that is failing is currently running build 11.0.6567.

I've checked permissions on the directory I'm running the setup from, (local disk, not UNC), my user account has SQL sysadmin and domain admin rights.

I've scripted the installation of SP4 to run silently and this has run successfully on over 100 SQL Servers, but fails on this server. I've run it manually, but I get the same problem.

Where can I look to see why the installation is failing? Has anyone else seen this happen? If I can find something logging what's happening, I will have a base to work from, but at present, I don't know where to start.

I'm not the worlds greatest SQL expert, so my apologies if I've missed anything obvious.

Many Thanks

John

Repair or Replace SQL Server 2017 Developer Edition.

The mandatory update from Microsoft this past week seems to have trashed my ability to import Excel files into SQL Server.  It says Excel isn't a valid connection manager type.  I've reinstalled Office and the ACE Database Runtimes, with no success.

My next idea is to reinstall or repair SQL Server 2017, the developer edition.  I started to try repair, but that requires the install media files.  On the download website, there are two options: an ISO or CAB files.  I'm not sure which the repair needs.  If you can tell me, that might help.

Further if you have any other suggestions on remedying this error, that would be great:

The connection type "EXCEL, {8FD37A45-01A4-210C-6C6D-575139717076}" specified for connection manager "{F118BC96-4456-4B60-A69F-1E69A7BACCFF}" is not recognized as a valid connection manager type. This error is returned when an attempt is made to create a connection manager for an unknown connection type. Check the spelling in the connection type name.

------------------------------

In SSMS, I clicked on on of the databases and selected Task, then import data, select Excel, and I see this error immediately.

I'm running SQL Server 2017 Developer Edition and the most current version of SSDT (just downloaded and installed as an attempt to fix this issue).  The machine is 64-bit Windows 2012 R2.

I'm running Microsoft Office 365 64-bit, but again, things have been running perfectly until today with SSIS accessing Excel.

My guess is that something, perhaps in yesterday's Windows update corrupted, whatever it is that SQL needs to connect to an Excel data source, but that's only a guess.

I have installed the 64-bit versions of

Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0

Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.15.0

Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.16.0

Any possible solution?  Is there something I need to reinstall?  Please advise.

Is there an SQL Server developer edition available for Linux?

We are planning to develop an SQL Server 2017 or 2019 application in a Linux environment, but I couldn't find a developer edition that is downloadable for Linux. Does anyone know if such an edition exists? When I download the normal developer edition, all I could download is an EXE file, and the various Linux versions on the download page only have evaluation versions that expire after a certain amount of days. Thanks!

uninstall SQL Server 2017 / 2019, Warning 26003

hello,

for testing and developing i have installed Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Developer (German) to my computer.

yesterday i decided to upgrade to Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Developer (German). the upgrade to 2019 was successfully, but i thought after an upgrade all old SQL Server 2017 would be removed, but it wasn't. i still have all the SQL Server 2017 menu entries on start menu and all the old Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Setup entry in the uninstall control panel.

i now tried to uninstall the SQL server 2017 setup but then i get always the warning 26003:

ok, then i tried to uninstall SQL Server 2019 as well and that will show up a very similar warning dialog:

i want to uninstall all SQL Server (2017 & 2019) from my computer to reinstall only SQL Server 2019 - because i don't have so much diskspace left.

at the moment i am not able to uninstall SQL Server 2019 nor SQL Server 2017.

there are older posts for "solutions" of warning 26003 available, to browse the regitries and remove everything that looks like part of SQL Server, but only for very old SQL Server 2008.
i mean in the meantime there should be a more safe reliable automatic solution available without hacking around...

Hi,

Since I installed ssms 18.x, I have trouble when I want to create a new extended session, following theses steps "management->Extended Event->Sessions" click right on "new session." When the dialog box is open, I click on "events."  and the list of events remains desperately empty.
I make a screenshot see below.
I already tried to uninstall and install again(with a reboot).
I tried to re-install the french edition with the same issues.

Best practive for vCPUs for best SQL performance?

What is the best way to set up a sql server on vmware for best performance?  We have plenty of memory however we’re not sure the best way to configure the vCPUs.  Right now our primary sql server has 1 socket with 4 virtual processors.  I read somewhere that best practice for sql was to have 1 processor per socket?

SQL Server 2016 huge performance difference between two identical servers with same setup

$

I have two identical physical servers:

ProLiant DL360 Gen9 (Intel Xeon E5 1620 v2, 2 sockets, 8 cores, 16 logical processors, RAM 256 GB)

Windows Server 2012 R2

SQL Server 2016 (CU8)

And I experience a huge performance difference in som agent jobs (SSIS) where the execution time is 2 to 4 times longer on one of the servers. Here to mention it is the same "code" behind in the SSIS package.

My colleagues and I have tried several things already which did not help. The last couple of days I focused on the network side of things and I have found a difference in the setup. I do not know if it is relevant but I would like to adjust the systems so I know they are "really" identical.

So on the slow machine when checking the ports listning:

Compare to the "good" server and all my test servers.

Anyone have an idea why on the bad system I have TCP 0.0.0.0:1434 listening instead of TCP 127.0.0.1:1434? And TCP [::]:1434 instead of [::1]:1434.
I have not found anywhere where I could change this setting in SQL. Any suggestions? Or is this somewhere in the "Windows" TCP / IP settings I need to change to get this setup the same way.

Thx

Stefan
