I am trying upgrade SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition 64 bit SP4 to "SQL Server 2005 ENTERPRISE edition 64 bit SP4" on WINDOWS 2008 R2 64 bit server and I keep getting the "This program has compatibility issues" message with

Program: Visual Studio

Publisher: Microsoft

Location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe

and other similar errors.

What I found on the Microsoft site is this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960320?wa=wsignin1.0

but this is for SP3. I am installing SP4. Does it stil apply ?. Is there any other way to get around this problem ?

Thanks.

Upgrade Standard to Enterprise both 2008 R2 on a mirrored pair.

Hello, I've attempted to find a good article on upgrading the edition of SQL Server with mirrored instances. I had planned to break the mirror and take care of each side starting with my passive side. But, I thought to check if there is a better way.

Thanks!

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Installation issue (32 bit vs 64 bit)

$

I downloaded the file "SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe" form the following site:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=26729

I was hoping to download the 64 bit edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 onto my computer. When I opened it up I quickly realized I had downloaded the 32 bit edition instead. So, I un-installed SQL Server, downloaded "SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe" again (thinking I must have downloaded the wrong one accidentally the first time), and re-installed. Again, I find that I have installed the 32 bit version of SQL Server onto my computer (I can't restore databases that were created in 64 bit edition into the database, also when I run the following query "select serverproperty('Edition'), I get the following result... "Express Edition". For the 64 bit version I am used to seeing "Express Edition (64 bit)". I am sure the solution is obvious, however, I cannot seem to figure it out.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks!

Installing a 32-bit and a 64-bit instance of SQL Server 2008 R2

$

I am setting up a new server and have discovered that one of the applications we are installing will only run on a 32-bit instance of SQL Server. So, my plan is to install both a 64-bit and a 32-bit instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 and have one question regarding best practices. Should I install two separate named instances (e.g. SQL64 and SQL32) or should I install a default instance of the 64-bit version and then a named version of the 32-bit version. Does it make a difference either way?

Thanks in advance.

Why size of bak file grows radically when doing backup

I have SQL Server 2012 and doing backups several times in day. Everytime I make backup, size of bak file grows even changes has been very small since last backup. Bak file size have growed so fast that hard drive capacity has been reached.

Why? What information is added to the bak file? Is it backuping every single transaction?

How to optimize so that bak file consist only the current status of tables and contents?

Is Microsoft supporting SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows 2012 cluster?

Hi All,

We have a number of applications that are using SQL server 2008 R2 standard Edition. I want to migrate the databases to a SQL server 2008 R2 cluster. Migrating the databases to SQL server 2012 is not an option. Most applications do not support SQL server 2012.

Do I have to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 cluster? Is it possible to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows 2012 cluster? Does Microsoft support installing SQL server 2008 R2 on a Windows server 2012 cluster? Will I be able to use some of the new functionality that Windows 2012 server offers?

Best regards,

Erik

the setting 'pid' is not allowed when the value of setting 'action' is 'repair'

Hi all,

I got a user running parallel desktop (windows 7 sp1) on a mac.  I installed sql ssms 2012 w/ sp1 and all we well until yesterday when his Apple side decided to do some god awful update.  After the update, ssms won't open up.  when you double click on it, it doesn't do anything, doesn't show up in process monitor.

worse, I can't even see the uninstall option in Programs and Features but the folders and registry are present.

I have tried to do a repair but I ended up with this error:

the setting 'pid' is not allowed when the value of setting 'action' is 'repair'

error code 0x84b40005

has anyone see this, if so can you please provide a fix?

Thanks,

Should Cumulative Updates be installed onto a brand new SQL Server?

$

I am just looking for some opinions on whether or not I should install Cumulative Update 5 for SQL Server 2008 R2 (with SP2) or not. It would seem that Microsoft warns against installing what they consider a "hotfix" unless one is actually experiencing a problem. Well, I am setting up a new server so have no way of knowing (yet) whether I might experience any of the listed issues or not.

Is there a best practice as to whether or not to install Cumulative Updates on a brand new server?

Installing a 2nd Instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 and Feature Selection

$

I just completed installing a default 64-bit instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. Now I need to install a 32-bit instance as well because we have one vendor that does not support 64-bit versions.

When I installed the default instance I chose the following features. Database Engine Services, Client Tools Connectivity, SQL Server Books Online, and both the basic and complete management tools.

I know that the 2nd instance needs to be installed in it's own folder but I have two questions.

1. When I choose features for the 2nd instance do I need to reinstall the "Shared" features as well? Or will the shared features installed with the 64-bit instance work with the 32-bit instance as well. (This would include the Client Tools Connectivity, SQL Server Books Online and the basic and complete management tools).

2. Is it advisable to create all new data folders for the 2nd instance? I think I want separate folders for the user database directory, the user log directory and the backup directory but was wondering if it was ok to share the Temp DB and Temp Log directories?

Thanks in advance.

How to Upgrade From Evalution to Licensed Edition 2012. Do I need to uninstall Evaluation Edition?

$

I am currently on the Evaluation Edition of 2012. The evaluation period hasn't ended, but we are ready to go the licensed edition. We have the install that has the product key. So I started the setup.exe and went through the typical steps but got an error on the Instance Configuration step. Right now, the Evaluation Edition is on the default instance (MSSQLSERVER). My thought was that I can just install the licensed version over this. But maybe not. Do I need to uninstall the Evaluation Edition before I can install the licensed version?

DB for storing 5-10 GB / minute

$

I'm with a research institution, and we're looking into capturing data from simultaneous camera streams over a period of hours to support our research efforts. Our lofty data storage goals, however, exceed my experience with previous databases. We want to store images at 30 Hz, averaging 5-10 Gb / minute (depending on the final configuration of the system). All of the cameras would be physically connected to the same device, so we're not worried yet about network transmission rates - but dropping data could be a big deal.

Does anyone have recommendations on what kind of hardware / software configuration could support such data storage? Can SQL Server support that, or should I look elsewhere? My previous experience using SQL Server suggests I'll need more than just a good desktop computer, but I don't know how to go about determining the hardware needs. How much memory? Number of processors? Acceptable hard disks? Other hardware concerns I don't know? Can anybody make recommendations, or tell me where to look for more information?

Please note that I'm just looking for a starting point from which to begin discussions right now. We don't know what the associated costs are with such a system design.

Thank you in advance

Moving SQL Server to a new Domain

$

Hi

We have been taken over by another company and have migrated all our AD Accounts PC's and Servers to the new Domain except for our SQL servers that are still running in the old domain.

I need to move the SQL servers to the new Domain now.  We are still running Windows 2003 AD.  We have a full trust relationship between the old Domain and the New Domain.  We have all the SQL Services running as service accounts in the New Domain.

Is there anything else I should consider before moving the Old SQL Servers to the New Domain?
