adding new and changing sql management account

$

I have few SQL 2012 servers. A management account on these servers is AD basic user account: sqladmin that is a member of Local Administrators group on each server.

couple of questions:

1. if I will change the password for sqladmin in AD, where I have to change the password on SQL servers.

For each SQL service (in services) ? No option in Management studio? Or may be not at all on SQL servers?

2. On one SQL server (SQL 2008) SQL management account is member of Domain Admins group.

I want to replace it by existing for this purpose basic AD account: sqladmin.

How to proceed?

Thanks.

Hi All,

I am new to SQL .

I have SQL Server 2008 with SP2 installed and on the the same server i have a Application namend Microsoft System center operations manager 2007 R2 installed which uses SQL databases to store its application data. SQL is very mandatory and if the SQL services stops this application will also not at all work.

From past few days i see performance issues in my SCOM Application and i suspect it is because of SQL  server issues.

When i ran a query XP_Readerrorlog i found these errors:

=============================================

Is this normal or some thing serious. If serious what can i do to fix this issue ?

Sql 2005 -> 2008 Upgrade Advisor Warning

$

The Advisor generated two warnings for the DB we wanted to upgrade:

"Column aliases in ORDER BY clause cannot be prefixed by table alias"

I fixed this issue in Dev but the database is very old and the procs involved are somewhat obscure so the developers don't want me to touch the procs.  The procs executes fine using the sql 2005 syntax under sql 2008 but I'm still concerned not changing it could be problematic (in the future?) What do you think?

I'm trying to install Windows Azure PowerShell on my Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise laptop. As a prerequisite, it needs to install Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB, I but keep receiving an error:

Service 'SQL Server VSS Writer' (SQLWriter) failed to start. Verify that you have
sufficient privileges to start system services.

The service that it tries to use by default is the Local Service. I verified that it has log on as a service privileges and even did a restart. Same error.

any ideas?

KB2716436 or KB2716435 Diff between QFE and GDR

$
0
0

The QFE and GDR confuse me. The Windows Update says install the GDR on the server (KB2716436). And of course, try a zillion times, read about the frustration everyone else has and GEE, the GDR doesn't work.  I did something I generally try to avoid - reading white paper, and of course there it is in black and white - 36 is a GDR and 35 if  QFE.   My thought was, OK - the GDR has failed a zillion times, can't hurt to try a QFE and WOW - presto, QFE installs.

What's in the GDR and makes it fail where the QFE doesn't?  What's wrong with my machine that only the QFE works?

Where is the query window in SSMSE 2008 Express?

$

I have been trying to find the query window in SQL Server 2008 Express.  I've been using SSMSE 2005 Express from a Start Menu button called "SQL Server Management Studio Express."  So far I have installed Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM - Express with Management Tools, and also Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 Management Studio Express, and finally SQL Server 2008 Express Service Pack 3.  These are all the "86" installs for Windows 7, 32-bit, for example "SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe."  However I still can't find a button to open an application that will allow me to run queries.  All the Start Menu buttons I have now are Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - Configuration Tools, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 - Import and Export Data (32-bit), andMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 - Configuration Tools.  The "Installed SQL Server features discovery report" shows nothing installed, but I've seen others say the same thing, so I'm not sure that's even working properly.

All I'm really trying to do is connect to a pre-existing SQL Server 2008 database on another server from my computer, and bounce SQL queries off of it.  Also it would be nice if there were an "Enterprise Manager" application such as I used to have with SQL Server 2000 that would actually graphically help write the queries.

Can somebody help me unwind this?  Thank you.

Uninstalling one instance in a side-by-side installation of SQL Server

$

Background:

My server has 2 commercial products. Product A relies on SQL Server 2005 Express and Product B relies on SQL Server 2008 R2.

Product A will be updated which requires an update to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express 64bit (cannot use the full version).

Issue:

I cannot update 2005 express to 2008 express because 2005 express is a 32bit installation. I plan to uninstall 2005 and then install the necessary express version, but I don't want to interfere with the SQL Server 2008 R2 installation in the process. I've searched a bit but I can't find much information on this type of problem. If anyone can provide any information, write-ups, etc. it would be greatly appreciated!

Upgrade sql server 2008 to 2008R2 and apply Service pack 3

Hello,

I have a two node cluster (sql server 2008).  I would like to upgrade to SQL Server R2 and at the same time would like to patch to Service Pack 3.  What would be the best way to accomplish this task with minimal downtime to the users?

This is my plan:

1.  Detach any read only databases.

2.  Upgrade to 2008 R2 (shared feature only) on passive node (node1).

3.  Apply SP3 on passive node in step 2.

4.  Swith active node to passive node (node2).

5. Upgrade to 2008 R2 (shared feature only) on node2.

6. Apply SP3 on node2.

7.  Upgrade db (instance) on node2 to 2008 R2.

8.  Upgrade db (instance) on node1 to 2008 R2.

9.  Re-attach read only databases.

Is my procedures correct?

Thank you.
