Multiple Instances Upgrade Question?

$

Hello  -

I have a SQL server with multiple instances on it and a application is telling us that it only supports SQL Server 2008 R2 and currently all those instances are SQL Server 2008.

My question is can I just upgrade the one instance that houses the application that needs 2008 R2 or will I need to apply that upgarde to all the instances on that server?

Regards,

David

Cannot login into sql server database from VB.Net application

I have a named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 installed in my local computer. This computer is connected in a LAN to a domain. The sql server uses windows authentication. I log into the computer with my domain account. This login name is an user of the local computer (Administator). It is also a valid login of the database I created a year ago. Even more it is the owner of the Database (dbo). I am developing an application on VB .NET and everything was working fine. I was able to connect to the database from my application and perform lots of functions that effected the database (CRUD).I do not know what I did but after "something I did" I cannot open the database from the application anymore. I get a System.Data.SQLClient.Sqlexception error whose message is: Cannot Open Database:"c:\BDDSICS\SICS.mdf" requested by the login. Login failed for user 'Control\camilo.henao'.

I am able to log in into the data base from the Microsoft SQL Server Mangement Studio using the same login I use to run the application. I work fine from the MSSSMS with no problem.I have tried many things like running as administator, both the MSSSMS and Visual Basic 20120 Express, have changed the default data base for this login to master and to the actual database and yet I cannot get over this problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled SQl Server and VB 201o Express just to obtain the same behavior.

Any assistance would be greatle appreciated.

Problem installing SQL Server 2012 (Windows 7 64 bit)

Hi everybody,

I have SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 installed and VS 2010 SP1 installed (Ultimate edition of VS). I tried to install SQL Server 2012. I had failures with the following:

It seems it's looking for installation file of VS 2010 Ultimate. My question is - why does it looking for that file during installation of SQL Server 2012 and what should I do if I can not find it? I searched my C drive for that file using Agent Ransack and it didn't find it. I don't remember the exact details of how did I install the VS 2010. I found SP1 files for VS 2010 saved. What should I do now? Thanks in advance.

This is what I have installed for VS Ultimate 2010. I also searched my Downloads folder and I could not find anything that looks like VS install. I really don't remember where I could have saved it (if I did). I don't have DVD media as I used MSDN Ultimate Subscription (which now has expired already) to install VS 2010.

Hi,

I have a customer who is facing dead lock issue in the server. We have tried many ways to resolve it and could not. As other customers a working fine the only difference we see is that this customer is having SQL failover Clustering. I want to create a test lab with SQL server clustering to test our application. Is ther any easy way to create this?

Thanks,

Help!  I've got XP SP3 and I have spent all morning trying to set up Visual Studio 2008 (no problem) and MS SQL 2005.  My company has SQL 2005 in all three flavors: Developer Edition (which came with my VS 2008 upgrade), Standard edition, and MS SQL EXPRESS 2005.  Each time I go through the process of the install.   It seems to crap out at one of the componenents (MSXML6).  Everything says 'Set up Completed ' Then I get to the very end and it says 'Could not install SQL Server'.  So I unistalled everything related to SQL and started over.  Now I just installed VS 2005 and then upgraded to VS2008.  I don't know what to do, I've installed MS-SQL Server before with mixed mode and stored procs and all that.  Thank you fo rany help you could be in this matter.

Hello

While I am installing Microsoft SQL SERVER 2012 PowerPivot for excel, I get an error:

The cabinet file 'Redist.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a newwork erro, an error reading from installation media, or a problem with this package.

I've installed .NET 4.0 and VS2012 Tools for Office Runtime first and then installed excel 2010 according to the instructrion on Microsoft web site. And the msi Microsoft SQL SERVER 2012 PowerPivot for excel was downloaded from MS site. Any idea?

Thanks in advance,

Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista)

Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista).

SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running.  This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself.

I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name:  MSSQLSERVER and .\MSSQLSERVER neither works.

The only thing that works for my installation is just plain ".\" (no quotes) and nothing else.  Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this.  Thanks.

Spawned SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 installation freezes during ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow

$

We have an InstallShield installation package that spawns an installation of MS SQL Server 2008 R2, depending on what components the user selects to install. This has worked fine, but now we need to support Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, so we want to distribute SP2 of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition instead of the original SP1. The only difference made to the installation package is to replace the redistributable of SQL Server R2 Express Edition SP1 with SP2. If the SP1 version is used Windows 2012 and Windows 8 will popup a message saying that there is compatibility issues with that version of SQL Server.

When the installation package use SQL SP2 the SQL Server installation starts, extracts files etc and and begins the installation, but then freezes at the step ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow displayed in the installer UI.
There is no significant CPU usage and no increase in memory by any process like msiexec or similar and there is no error message displayed.
It is not possible to cancel the installation either (cancel button disabled). Reviewing the SQL Server log files shows the following lines in the Detail_ComponentUpdate log

2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0
2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Waiting for service 'msiserver' to accept the stop request.
2012-08-23 08:33:06 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running
2012-08-23 08:33:11 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running
2012-08-23 08:33:16 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Running <- repeated indefintely until the installer is killed in task manager

When using SP1 the same log files says the following

2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Attempting to open registry subkey SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0
2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Waiting for service 'msiserver' to accept the stop request.
2012-08-23 11:00:57 Slp: Sco: Returning service status Stopped

The problems appears to be that the installer cannot shutdown the msiserver service and just loops indefinitely.
The following conditions apply to all tested machines which is Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 RC, Windows Server 2008 R2

Machine is clean, no existing versions of SQL Server exists prior to installation. All security updates etc. applied.

Logged in user is local administrator.

Installation is successful if the SP1 version of SQL Server 2012 is used instead of the SP2 version

The SP2 version can be installed successfully from the command prompt (run as administrator). In this case I use the following command

line (replaced password with ****):
SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe /ACTION=install /INSTANCENAME=PRODACAPO /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /HIDECONSOLE /QUIETSIMPLE /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=**** /SQLSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM"

Display language is US English and SQL Server package is US English. Input/keyboard language is Swedish.

Windows Installer service cannot be shutdown from services as Stop and Restart options are disabled.

No summary.txt file is created when the installation freezes

Are there any changes in the behavior of the installation package from SP1 to SP2? Since SP1 works it seems that InstallShield cannot be blamed for this problem? However, installing from the command prompt works which means that the problem seem to lie in with how the SQL installation is spawned from InstallShield. Currently this problem is preventing us from supporting Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 properly.
If you need any log files or other info I can provide that promptly.

When ever I click on an MDF file in VS2005 I get the following message.

Required Components Missing.

Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly.  Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URl: http:go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkID=49251.

I think this may have been due to the install order and options I selected.

1. VS2005 Pro, without SQL Server Express 2005 as I was planning to install SQL2005 Developer.
2. SQL2005 Developer.

I then noticed the above problem and installed SQL Server Express 2005 from the VS Pro DVD.  I still have the problem.

Any ideas how I can fix this ?

SQL 2012 SSRS report solution - want to move to SQL 2008 R2

$

I installed an evaluation copy of SQL 2012 to check it out while trying my hand at the new SSRS skills I'm learning.  I now have one reporting solution and am having recurring problems with SQL 2012 security when I need to log into different schemas to pull some sample data and trying at the same time to figure out how an end user would eventually be able to choose which schema they want a report run on.  So far, I'm not finding that possible in SSRS like it is in Cognos.

Since the clients who may eventually use some reports I'm creating are using SQL 2008, maybe I should go back to a dev install of 2008 and continue playing around there and experimenting with what SSRS can do and how I would get some things moved to a production server eventually.  I understand SSRS didn't change much between 2008 and 2012.

Are there any issues with opening a 2012 SSRS project in SSRS 2008 R2?  I could uninstall SQL 2012 and install 2008 and try, but if it doesn't work.... I really don't want to have to start over.  So, then I thought, would it be possible to install 2008 when I already have 2012 installed so that I effectively have both versions to test things out and still have 2012 to open the file if 2008 can't....

So, 2 questions here:

1. Should I be able to open my SSRS project file in 2008 when it was created in 2012? i.e., is it backwards compatible?

2. If #1 is not possible, is it possible, or if no one knows, is it possible to install 2008 when 2012 is already installed..? Choosing an instance name, different folders, etc...?

Thank you!!

Dana

SQL Server 2008 R2 Install problem. Windows 7 x64 Permission error.

Trying to install SS 2008 R2 (Express or Standard)  on Windows 7 x64 laptop with vs2010.   I consistantly get a permissions error.   My user is in local 'Administrators' group and I tried running with 'Run as Admin'.   I tried manually setting permissions on the 'Microsoft SQL Server' folder (and children) to give Full control to all users.

I've tried about a dozen different installs.  Similar problem at http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/0249fd3a-5516-4cf6-b0da-ee65ef1ab500 but I'd prefer not to reinstall windows!
