Why upgrade advisor could not detect SQL Server ?

0
0

Hello there,

We would like to migrate a SQL Server 2005 (windows 2003 R2, SP2)  to 2012.  The SQL Server 2012 Upgrade Advisor was installed on a new Windows 2008 R2 server.

When I ran the 2012 upgrade advisor against the SQL Server 2005, after specifying server name, components (SQL Server database engine), instance name, authentication mehtod, user name, password, I could see the databases on that 2005 server. However when I hit 'run', the upgrade advisor returned the error message "The network path was not found".

Also the Detect button returned the following message. The Remote Registry service is running on the sql server 2005.

[[

TITLE: Detect SQL Server Components
------------------------------

Upgrade Advisor could not detect SQL Server components on the server. Please check if current user has the privilege to access target server's registry, and if the Remote Registry service in target server is started.

]]

I am wondering why the upgrade advisor can see the databases on the remote sql server 2005 but still reports "the network path was not found."?

Lost in the forest--sqlserver

I have multiple questions regarding sqlserver.  This will probably get me a reprimand for violating the rules, but I would appreciate someone's overview of where I've been and where I am going. Here goes:

I've been developing in ASP.NET/VB for about a year on a Vista machine using Visual Web Developer Express.  I am now using a trial of VS2010 which will expire in a short time and I still have not got a final confirmation that I can deploy my applications to my hosted server.  Most of my time has been spent in determining how to install one version of this and that and then reinstall and hope for better results.  My database application is really the only thing that is keeping me from moving ahead.  My host tells me that I need to convert the server 2008 database to a 2008 R2 format to run the application.

Here come the questions.

1.  I was told by my host to simply run sqlserver management console to run the conversion.  I acquired this animal to no avail.  Whatever I tried, I was told to try something else.

2.  I got a very respectable answer the other day that told me that all I need to do to convert from 2008 to 2008R2 is to do a backup of 2008 and a restore to a 2008R2 instance.  The only question raised by this easy-to-understand process is what must I do to do a backup.  I have been programming for a long time and always understood backup to mean a simple process of copying a file for safekeeping.  Not so here!  It seems that I would have to read for a very long time to understand how to go about in this environment.  I saw no option to do this backup within the sqlserver2008 software.  I suspect that I need to run setup again to obtain that option.  Since I installed server 2008 myself, I do not understand why the proper setup option was not given me.  Nonetheless, my first question is merely a confirmation that this is what I need to do to obtain a backup capability.

3.  Assuming that I have the backup capability, what is the next stumbling block? Will a 2008R2 instance be required in order to do the restore?  I do not have a 2008 R2 instance so how will I do the restore?  Do I need to be running ss2008R2?  If so, then that leads me to the next question.

4.  If I was running  2008R2 server, then I presume I would not need to do any kind of conversion, backup/restore and I would be ready to deploy the application and the database, correct?  The only question this raises is whether a sqlserver2008R2 is compatible with VS2010 which is what I am running now.

I hope these questions are easy for a knowledgeable respondee.  Thanks anyone.

error upgrading to SQL 2008

I get the following error when attempting to upgrade a SQL database from SQL 2000 to SQL2008.   I have attempted both the SQL backup and restore way, and the detach and attach way.   I ran the SQL upgrade advisor first and it came through clean.   Any other ideas?  The links given in the error message appear to be dead.

Cannot login into sql server database from VB.Net application

I have a named instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 installed in my local computer. This computer is connected in a LAN to a domain. The sql server uses windows authentication. I log into the computer with my domain account. This login name is an user of the local computer (Administator). It is also a valid login of the database I created a year ago. Even more it is the owner of the Database (dbo). I am developing an application on VB .NET and everything was working fine. I was able to connect to the database from my application and perform lots of functions that effected the database (CRUD).I do not know what I did but after "something I did" I cannot open the database from the application anymore. I get a System.Data.SQLClient.Sqlexception error whose message is: Cannot Open Database:"c:\BDDSICS\SICS.mdf" requested by the login. Login failed for user 'Control\camilo.henao'.

I am able to log in into the data base from the Microsoft SQL Server Mangement Studio using the same login I use to run the application. I work fine from the MSSSMS with no problem.I have tried many things like running as administator, both the MSSSMS and Visual Basic 20120 Express, have changed the default data base for this login to master and to the actual database and yet I cannot get over this problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled SQl Server and VB 201o Express just to obtain the same behavior.

Any assistance would be greatle appreciated.

How can i change the conecction mode to the server?

Compatibility problems with SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (?)

0

I'm running SQL Server Management Studio 2012

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio      11.0.2100.60
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)      6.1.7601.17514
Microsoft MSXML      3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer      9.0.8112.16421
Microsoft .NET Framework      4.0.30319.269
Operating System      6.1.7601

This machine is only a few months old (Windows 7) so I must have downloaded this recently.

For no good reason I thought I'd take a peek at AdventureWorks for SQL Server 2012.  (http://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/55330)

When I try to attach either of the first two data files listed, I get the message: The database 'AdventureWorks2012' cannot be opened because it is version 705. This server supports version 612 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported.

What's the simplest fix for this?  To the best of my knowledge all my updates are current.

SQL 2012 Upgrade Hangs

I am in the process of upgrading my SQL 2K8R2 installation to 2012.  Everything works as advertised until it gets to the Install_sql_rs_Cpu64_Action step and then it hangs.  The CPU is at 100% with sqlserver taking almost all of that.  What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks

Unable to Install SQL Server 2012 Express

I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Express about 3 weeks ago. (ENU\x86\SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe) (707.1MB). Still not up and running. MS Books On-Line (user manual) not very helpful!. Purchased Robin Dewson's Book (Beginning SQL Server 2012 for Developers. Pub. by Apress). This book looks good but doesn't help much either with regard to installation. Robin uses the SQL Server 2012 Standard edition to install so I wonder whether Robin ever downloaded the Express version and tried to install it from the 'Installation Center' which he mentions from time to time and that the installation procedure in the book is still relevent to the Express version , albeit with limited features. Not so, so far! There are subtle differences.

My installation effort resulted in :

- Database Engine Service........... Failed

- SQL Server Replication ............. Failed

- SQL Browser ........................... Succeeded

- SQL Writer .............................. Succeeded

Note 1. I'm pretty sure my problems are not hardware related as I have a fairly new machine running Windows 7 premium home edition with

a good all round spec. (32bit o/s)

Note2. I have an error report log .txt which may mean something to someone at MS. Available on request.

Q1. Does anyone out there know how to get hold of reliable Step-by-Step instructions on installing the said software?

Q2. How do I un-install SQL Server 2012 Express to start again.

Q3. Rather than use a download version how do I get a media version, on CD for example?

Hope you can help with some of these issues. Thanks.

Error 0x800736CC when trying to install SQL Server 2012 Setup

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2012 on Windows Server 2008R2 SP1, and get the following message while the setup files are being installed:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.MFC,version="8.0.50727.4053",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchitecture="amd64",type="win32"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x800736CC.

The log indicates a problem with a component's file not matching the manifest, but that doesn't give me any ideas about how to solve the problem.

What is the solution?

Attching To MDFs

I'm writing a connection string for a .Net Winforms app to attach to an MDF on the local machine. I'm aware of the AttachDBFileName option in the connectionstring but I noticed that an instance name is still specified. Is SQL Server instance required to attach an .MDF or can .Net's SQL Client attach to an MDF file without a SQL Server instance on the machine?

Move log files for SQL 2005 databases to another drive

Hello,

I need to move all log files for my SQL 2005 databases to another drive.  I don't wish to shrink the files, I need to move the logs to another drive spindle.  I did find an article (Article ID: 224071) that describes moving both the database and logs using sp_detach and then sp_attach.  What is the best way just to move the logs to another drive on the same server, and that keeps the databases in their original location?

Thanks.

How do you move databases from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL

to d:\MSSQL.1\MSSQL?

I want to copy them, then detach/retach at the new location

Thanks
